Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to assess the validity of employing prosodic terms in poetry, transforming them from dry, logical elements into active components of the poet's experience. This is achieved by intensifying linguistic connotation and highlighting their role in praise, pride, satire, and the construction of new poetic imagery.

Methods: The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method through two main axes: exploring the roots of the usage of prosodic terms and their derivations by poets, supported by examples and poetic evidence, and analyzing the characteristics of the prosodic term used in the poem regarding selection and employment, and the poet's ability to use it in praise, pride, satire, and forming poetic imagery.

Results: The study found that prosodic terms were clearly present in ancient Arabic poetry across different eras and environments. Poets progressed from merely focusing on the linguistic meaning to employing and utilizing this meaning in various poetic purposes such as pride, praise, and satire. This evolved into an attempt to construct innovative poetic imagery that enriches the text and highlights its aesthetics.

Conclusions: The study proved the poet's ability to exploit and employ the potentials of prosodic terms, given their presence in the Arab cultural and intellectual heritage, through two main approaches: first, by employing terms specific to prosodic pitfalls and utilizing the gap between correctness and fault in prosodic terms when forming poetic imagery; second, by using the names of poetic meters naturally as attributes to affirm or negate poetic meanings.
