Abstract

Objectives: The present study aimed to examine the levels of parental occupation influence, career choice, and the relationship between them among university students in Jordan.

Methods: The study employed a descriptive correlational approach, with students selected randomly through electronic questionnaires distributed via WhatsApp. The sample consisted of 100 students from the University of Jordan and Petra University, representing various fields of study. To achieve the study's objectives, scales measuring parental occupation influence and career choice were developed.

Results: The findings revealed that the levels of both parental occupation influence and career choice ability were moderate. Additionally, the results indicated a statistically significant relationship between parental occupation influence and career choice, as parental occupations played a notable role in determining the students' current fields of study.

Conclusions: Career choice is a foundational step in realizing students' aspirations in alignment with their interests and abilities. Thus, it is recommended that parents avoid pressuring their children into specific academic fields and instead allow them the autonomy to choose their specializations. This approach can yield numerous benefits, such as saving time and resources and minimizing the risk of failure in unsuitable fields. The study also recommends emphasizing the importance of career choice and independence during earlier stages of education to better prepare students for university.
