Rizqallah Ḥassūn’s Stylistic Choices in His Translation of the Book Ashʿar al-shiʿr (I Feel Poetry)

Objectives: This study aimed to trace the influence of Rizqallah Ḥassūn’s character, his historical circumstances, and political struggles on his translation of the books of the Holy Bible into verse in the book “I Feel Poetry”. It covers everything from the choice of the translation topic to the linguistic tools, vocabulary, and prosodic forms he employed in his translation.
Methodology: The research employed the historical method to trace the personality of Rizqallah Ḥassūn, as well as some of the political events and struggles he experienced. Additionally, the study utilized several modern stylistic concepts and certain traditional Arabic theories to explore the impact of Rizqallah Ḥassūn’s life and character on his choice of translation content, as well as the linguistic and prosodic techniques he used in his poetic translation of the book “I Feel Poetry”.
Results: The research highlighted that Rizqallah Ḥassūn’s choice to translate certain books of the Holy Bible was closely tied to the circumstances he lived through, and the sense of alienation he experienced. The study also revealed that his tendency to use old linguistic tools, rare prosodic techniques, and uncommon rhymes was connected, on the one hand, to his state of alienation and, on the other hand, to his political and national stance against the Ottoman Empire. This was evident through his deep engagement with Arabic literature and language, as well as his interest in publishing various magazines in Arabic and translating works from other languages into Arabic.
Conclusion: The research concluded that the life circumstances of Rizqallah Ḥassūn and the political struggles he faced had a significant impact on his translation of the book “I Feel Poetry”, both in terms of the subject matter and the linguistic and prosodic techniques he employed.
