Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to investigate how psychological stress sources and the big five personality factors can predict compulsive buying behavior among women.

Methods: The descriptive, predictive methodology was used in the study. The study sample included (739) married and unmarried females from Jordan's Ramtha District who were chosen using a convenient sampling method. After confirming their validity and reliability, the Psychological Stress Sources Scale, the Big Five Personality Factors Scale, and the Compulsive Buying Scale were used.

Results: The results showed that sources of psychological stress were at an average level across the board and domains; personality factors were at a high level except for neuroticism, which was at an average level; and compulsive buying was at an average level across the board but at a low level in the "buying unnecessary things" domain. The results also demonstrated that 20.7% of the explained variance of compulsive buying as a variable could be attributed to the five major components of personality, age, and employment position, as well as the social domain of the sources of psychological stress.

Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the social context of psychological stress sources, along with the five key components of personality, age, and occupational status, have a significant role in the development of compulsive shopping behaviors. The study recommended designing counseling programs for women to educate them on techniques to help reduce compulsive shopping behaviors.
