Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the level of writing anxiety among learners of Arabic in Indonesia and to determine whether statistically significant differences exist in their levels of anxiety based on the variables of gender, academic level, and specialization.

Methods: The study employed a descriptive approach, utilizing a writing anxiety scale comprising 16 items distributed across three domains: cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and avoidance behavior. The scale was administered to a sample of 1,101 Arabic language learners enrolled in Islamic universities in Indonesia.

Results: The findings indicated that the overall level of writing anxiety among the learners was moderate. A statistically significant difference was observed in the participants' writing anxiety levels based on gender, with female learners reporting higher mean scores than their male counterparts. Additionally, a significant difference was noted concerning academic level, as learners in their third year or higher exhibited higher mean scores compared to those in their second year or lower. However, no statistically significant differences were found based on specialization.

Conclusions: The study concluded that the moderate level of writing anxiety among Arabic learners enhances their awareness of the importance of improving their writing skills and motivates them to make additional efforts to achieve better proficiency in Arabic writing.
