Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to achieve three objectives: revealing the types of metaphors in Arabic proverbial discourse from a cognitive linguistics perspective, identifying the contribution of cognitive metaphors to proverbial discourse, and evaluating the epistemological contribution provided by the cognitive metaphors to traditional rhetoric by implementing some examples to renew rhetoric.

Methods: The study employed a qualitative approach in describing proverbs and analyzing metaphors and was based on a sample of 100 proverbs chosen randomly from the most popular sources on Arabic proverbs. The proverbs were then classified into two categories: proverbs that do not contain metaphors (60 Arabic proverbs were excluded) and proverbs that contained metaphors (40 Arabic proverbs). Among the proverbs that included metaphors, 15 proverbs that contained cognitive metaphors were examined qualitatively and divided into four types: directional, diagnostic, container, and entity metaphors.

Results: Results showed that Arabic proverbs possess different forms of metaphors, including cognitive metaphors, which are the pivot of this study. Results also showed that there are two forms of cognitive metaphors, which are metaphorical directionality and ontology that further represent diagnostic metaphors, entity or material metaphors, and containing metaphors. By applying the sample of the proverbs under investigation, the results showed that the cognitive metaphor constitutes an additional rhetorical facet that the traditional rhetoric neglected, and it can be included in modern rhetoric.

Conclusions: Arabic proverbs constitute important cognitive, discursive unit illustrating how to benefit from cognitive linguistics to reform rhetoric.
