The Effects of Learning the Arabic Language on Western Travelers’ Knowledge of the Societies of the Levant: The Travels of Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, James Silk Buckingham, and Selah Merrill as an Example

الملخص

الأهداف: الرحلة عين الجغرافيا المبصرة، وتكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة في تسليط الضوء على مدونات كل من الرحالة يوهان لوديغ بيركهارت (ت. 1817م)، وجيمس سيلك بيكنغهام (ت. 1855م)، وسيلاه ميريل (ت. 1909م) للإجابة عن تساؤل، هل كان لإتقان الرحالة الغربيين للغة العربية الأثر في فهم المجتمعات العربية بالشكل الصحيح؟ وهل شكل عدم إتقان اللغة العربية عائقاً لتواصل أولئك الرحالة مع سكان المناطق المراد استكشافها؟ وما هي طبيعة الجوانب التي أخطأوا فهمها؟

المنهجية: استخدم الباحث المنهج الوصفي النقلي والتحليلي؛ كما هو موضح في البحث.

النتائج: لوحظ قلة اختلاط سيلاه ميريل بسكان المناطق التي مر بها مقارنةً بكل من يوهان لوديغ بيركهارت وجيمس سيلك بيكنغهام، والذي يعزى لعدم إتقان سيلاه ميريل للغة العربية، مما شكل عائقاً أمام تواصله مع السكان، وفهم عادات، وتقاليد المجتمع.

الخلاصة: خلصت الدراسة إلى أن إتقان المستكشف للغة العربية له أثر مهم على الفهم الصحيح للمجتمع المراد استكشافه، وتفادي سوء الفهم، أو استهجان بعض التصرفات كما حدث لميريل.
