Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to present a novel perspective on predicating imperative verbs specifically to addressee pronouns, distinct from other pronouns. Additionally, it seeks to challenge the feasibility of predicating imperative verbs to absent, speaking pronouns, and overt nouns.

Methods: The study follows a methodology that combines description, analysis, and induction. It examines different aspects of the subject in both ancient and contemporary sources, analyzes the gathered information, discusses opinions, presents hypotheses, and scrutinizes them through linguistic analysis and linguistic usage observations. The study is structured into three sections: the first discusses the possibility of relying on the meanings of reception and request to justify predicating imperative verbs to addressee pronouns. The second section examines the possibility of predicating imperative verbs to non-addressee pronouns, presenting the hypothesis that the pronouns predicated to imperative verbs indicate both the absent and the addressee, and debates the validity of this assumption. The third section aims to balance the outcomes of the previous two sections and provide a comprehensive interpretation for predicating imperative verbs to the addressee pronouns.

Results: The specialization of imperative verbs in the future tense and the sense of request does not substantiate their predication to addressee pronouns. What does substantiate this is the concept of immediate confrontation, necessitating direct discourse. Direct discourse mandates presence, whether the addressee is physically present or presumed to be so, and predicates a present state. This finding endeavors to explicate a linguistic phenomenon hitherto unexplored.

Conclusions: The specificity of predicating imperative verbs to the addressee arises from the meaning of direct confrontation, which, in turn, demands direct discourse.
