Reality of Students’ Political Participation and Factors Affecting it in Jordanian Universities: ASU as a Model

Objectives: The study aims to explore political participation for the Applied Science private University students and the relevant factors, the reasons behind students’ reluctance to take part in the parliament and municipal elections. This study also try to clarify the relationship between the factors that affect the level of the students’ political participation and the reasons of their reluctance, and their tendencies toward the participation based on personal differences factor (age, marital status, year of study and the faculty).
Methods: This study adopted the analytical quantitative surveying. The study population consisted of 6670 students enrolled at ASU during the academic year 2021/2022, with a representative sample of 500 students that forms 7.49% of all population.
Results: The study showed a correlation between the affection of social, economic, and personal factors and the level of ASU students’ political participation in the parliament and municipal elections, and these factors are key driver in their orientation towards political participation.
Conclusion: Based on the results, this study recommends the importance of the university role in encouraging students to play their political and national role, and reinforcing the media role in promoting the students’ confidence in the political participation.
