The Importance of Restoring Heritage Buildings and the Impact of Smart Technologies in Redesigning Them: The Duke's Diwan as a Model

Abstract

Objectives: This study focuses on the renewal of heritage buildings in Jordan through modern eclectic architecture, aiming to understand stakeholder perceptions and the factors influencing the acceptance of such renovations.

Methods: A comprehensive survey was conducted targeting a diverse group of stakeholders, including architects, historians, and the general public. The survey examined various dimensions, including perceptions of historical value, cultural significance, functionality, aesthetic appeal, and concerns regarding the renovation process. Data collected from 180 participants were analyzed using statistical techniques such as descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis.

Results: The findings revealed that stakeholders generally recognize the importance of preserving historical value while integrating modern elements into heritage buildings. Most participants agreed that blending modern and traditional architecture can maintain a building's historical value while enhancing its functionality for contemporary use.

Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights for architects, urban planners, and policymakers involved in heritage building renovation projects. The results underscore the importance of addressing stakeholder concerns and ensuring that renovations align with cultural and historical values while meeting present-day functional and aesthetic requirements.
