Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a group counseling program based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and pet care (cats) in reducing the level of romantic love among individuals wishing to overcome romantic love.

Method: A quasi-experimental design was adopted, and the Romantic Love Scale was used before and after the program. The duration of the counseling program was one month. The study sample consisted of 20 young men and women from the University of Jordan who wished to overcome romantic love. The sample was randomly divided into two equal groups: an experimental group (10 individuals) who received the counseling program and a control group (10 individuals) who did not receive any program. To achieve the study’s objectives, the Romantic Love Scale, developed by Al-Maleh (2010), was used and applied to the study sample. A group counseling program based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and pet care (cats) was developed, consisting of eight counseling sessions, along with interviews and field observations.

Results: The results showed statistically significant differences at a significance level of (α ≤ 0.05) in the level of romantic love in favor of the experimental group. A reduction in the level of romantic love was observed among the experimental group members who underwent the program. This indicates that the counseling program was effective in reducing romantic love among the sample. Based on the results, a set of recommendations was provided.
