Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to analyse the phenomenon of linguistic triangles according to Al-Batalyusi in Al-Hariri’s Maqamat, and to demonstrate its semantic impact on the art of linguistic riddles and puzzles. It also examines the correlation between this phenomenon and the Arabic lexicon in terms of approaches to composition and detecting semantics, ultimately leading to a clarification of the semantic impact on changes to the morphological structure of words.

Methods: The study follows the descriptive-analytical approach in studying linguistic triangles semantically. It extrapolates Ptoleus's triangles, then extracts their usages in Al-Hariri's Maqamat in the domains of linguistic puzzles and lexical and morphological significance.

Results: Linguistic triangles supplement the art of riddles with abundant semantic material that facilitates their use in Maqamat and other literary texts. Moreover, they elucidate a number of morphological issues, such as the phenomenon of mitigation and transforming words from one morphological form to another while noting the change in connotations.

Conclusion: The use of linguistic triangles in Hariri’s Maqamat had the greatest impact in determining connotations through their interaction with the art of riddles, puzzles, morphological structures, and lexical meanings.
