The Islamic Trend in Turkey and Political Life 1918-2001

Objectives: The study aims to highlight the role of the Turkish Islamic movement in Turkish political life in the time period from 1918 to 2001 AD. It also aims to highlight the role of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in replacing the Islamic political system followed in the Ottoman Empire with a secular system in the Turkish Republic. The significance of the study lies shedding light on the Islamic movement in the Ottoman Empire and its role in the Turkish War of liberation, in addition to its role in Turkish political life after the establishment of the Turkish Republic by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Methods: The study adopted the historical analytical approach, which aims to monitor and analyze events in order to identify the real reasons that contributed to the political developments during the study period.
Results: The study showed the impact of Islamic-secular rivalry on political life in Turkey. It also demonstrated the role of the Turkish armed forces, which considered themselves the protectors of the secular regime in thwarting the attempts of the Islamic movement to gain power.
Conclusions: The study concluded that the Turkish armed forces were unable to eliminate the Turkish Islamic movement, although they succeeded in curtailing it in the period that followed the establishment of the Turkish Republic.
