The Credibility and Effectiveness of Digital Communication During Crisis: An Applied Study on the Corona Pandemic in Qatar

Abstract

Objectives: The study tested the credibility and effectiveness of digital media during Corona pandemic by identifying the role of social networking in carrying out their professional and ethical responsibilities in providing a reliable channel for individuals to access correct, accurate and documented information.

Methods: The study surveyed a stratified random sample of Arab and foreign nationalities in Doha whose size was 502 individuals using a standardized questionnaire that included scales for knowledge, awareness, and dependency.

Results: It has also been proven that there is a strong correlation between the level of browsing networking sites and the level of awareness of this disease, and between the level of knowledge about the virus and the level of awareness of it, as well as a correlation between the level of awareness and trust in networking sites as a source of information to be relied upon, as well as a correlation between the level of reliance on networking sites and the public's behavior towards following precautionary measures.

Conclusion: Social media must apply the professional ideology through accurate media governance that adopts several communication strategies based on crisis communications such as the strategy of deep digging, confrontation, focus and the entry of communication sites into alliances and partnerships with some agencies and news sources to verify the truth of their information.
