Abstract

Objectives: The present study aimed to identify the levels of insecurity and body image disorder symptoms among university students with physical disabilities. It also aimed to explore the relationship between feelings of insecurity and symptoms of body image disorder among these students.

Methods: The study used a descriptive correlational, and the sample consisted of 205 male and female students with physical disabilities enrolled in the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, selected using convenience sampling. The study utilized the Feelings of Insecurity Scale and the Body Image Disorder Scale.

Results: The results indicated that the levels of feelings of insecurity and symptoms of body image disorder were at a moderate level. Furthermore, the results showed statistically significant differences between the mean scores of feelings of deficiency and the mean scores of body image disturbance symptoms (overall and its domains) among students, attributed to gender and favoring females. Moreover, there were no statistically significant differences among students between the mean scores of feelings of insecurity and the mean scores of symptoms of body image disorder (overall and its domains). The results also revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between feelings of insecurity and symptoms of body image disorder (overall and its domains) among students.

Conclusions: The study revealed a moderate negative impact of body image on the lives, feelings, and experiences of physically disabled students, as their physical weakness clearly influenced their perceptions of their bodies and their susceptibility to social comments. The study recommends the importance of providing periodic psychological support programs for people with disabilities to help them overcome the obstacles and psychological barriers that they confront, as well as to benefit from successful studies and experiences in this field.
