Trump Peace Plan and its Arabic Translation: A Functionalist Study

Abstract

Objectives: This study examines the Arabic translation of the Trump Peace Plan, known in Arabic as ‘the deal of the century’ (2020). It traces differences between the source text and the target text at the following levels: vocabulary, structures, and terminology.

Methods: Different Arabic translations of the plan appeared, yet the focus here is on the translation initiated by the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD). This translation is titled: Trump’s Plan known as ‘the deal of the century’: Peace to Prosperity: A Vision to Improve the Lives of the Palestinian and Israeli People 2020. Drawing on functional approach, the study explores features of the target text in the light of the Arabic language systems and the needs of the recipients, identifying the mechanisms of texture creation in the target text at linguistic and terminological levels.

Results: The influence of the source text lead into anomalies in the target text, at the level of vocabulary, structures, and terminology. This resulted in deformities in the textual coherence and rendered the source text relatively uneven in its new environment, which may make these anomalies common in the target language over time. Attention is needed lest these anomalies become common in translated texts despite their tininess.

Conclusion: The study demonstrates that the source text encroached upon the target text. An aspect of the defect in this translation is that the target text was influenced by the source text at the levels of vocabulary, structures, style, and terminology.
