Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to clarify the contextual connotations and objectives of (Piety) from a pragmatic perspective in light of the Qur’anic discourse. Therefore, it explores its diverse paths, illustrating its profound significance in Quranic usage.

Methods: The study systematically examined the Quranic contexts in which the term (piety) appeared, elucidating the purposes for its usage and the collective good it encompassed for Muslims. Subsequently, it provided several semantic directives that influenced the pragmatic level contained in the verses. The study categorized their connotations and their pragmatic shifts under various headings dictated by the study's methodologies. The study also delved into the structural relationships of the active participle and its impact on the discursive level.

Results: Allah’s speech to the righteous in the declarative sentence in some verses was primarily a predicate, and this paralleled Allah's discourse to the Messenger (peace be upon him) when speaking about them. This reinforces their elevated status before their Lord, as they have reached the level of certainty that excludes any doubt in everything that Allah informs them of. The examination of the contexts in which the expression and its derivatives were used revealed a diverse range of meanings based on the various contextual usages. It was evident that the meaning did not remain constant but varied according to the diverse contexts in which it was employed.

Conclusion: The word “Pious” formed a reciprocal relationship with its neighbouring words in the places in which it was mentioned, accordingly, the semantic directions of it varied.
