Intentionalism in the Novel Naranjeh by the Writer Jokha Al-Harithiya Linguistic Study

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to uncover the linguistic structure of the novel "Naranja" by the author Jokha Alharthi and to observe its transformations in achieving its purposes and the means it relies on for persuasion and societal conflict.

Methods: The study adopts the criterion of intentionality, as it is one of the most important components that contribute to directing the communicative process between the text producer and its recipient. Through this criterion, the text producer is connected to the world and our knowledge of it. Accessing the speaker's intentions is only possible by understanding the meaning he/she intends, necessitating the recipient to grasp the meanings of the words placed in the language and the meanings that the text producer directs with his/her words and language. Clarifying the meaning is crucial in understanding the sender's intention.

Results: The study indicates that the text producer successfully employed the title of the novel, its events, and characters to express its intent. It addressed intellectual issues prevalent in Omani society and linked its purposes to the social reality. The text producer used two strategies to highlight its intent: the first was through present interviews in the same chapter, while the second strategy involved recalling what was mentioned in previous chapters.

Conclusion: This study confirms the ability of the producer of this novel to highlight its intent by using the title "Naranja," referring to a citrus tree that was widespread in Omani society. Women used to create beautiful rituals from its light (known as "al-ball" in Omani dialect). The text producer aligned the title "Naranja" with its societal context, events, and characters in the novel. The study also emphasizes that there are strategies followed by the text producer in highlighting and shaping its intent.
