Social Media and its Role in Shaping Awareness in the Jordanian Society in Light of the Public Sphere Theory

Abstract

Method: The study used the descriptive and analytical approach. It also used a  questionnaire consisting of three axes: cultural awareness, social awareness, and economic awareness to achieve the objectives of the study.  The study sample consisted of (1,500) individuals from the Jordanian governorates.

Results: The study results showed that the role played by social media in forming  the cultural awareness took the form of performing responsibilities, increasing people’s participation in occasions and events, being surrounded by friends and constructive dialogue. The results also showed that  social awareness took the form of respecting others’ beliefs, thoughts aspirations and  viewpoint whereas economic awareness got represented by deepening their knowledge of the touristic, shopping  and entertainment places, technologies, commodities and  job opportunities to better their living conditions. . The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the field of cultural awareness attributed to the variable of males. The results also showed that there were no statistically significant differences (α≤0.05) attributed to the variables of gender, age, and educational level in all areas.

Conclusions: The study recommends the need to empower the Jordanian youth through social media to perform responsibilities, respect the viewpoints of others, and have knowledge of shopping  and touristic places, technologies, goods, and others.
