Objectives: The study aims to examine food-related vocabulary in proverbs, with the goal of creating a linguistic lexicon on this subject.
Methods: Using an analytical statistical approach, the research analyzes 131 proverbs from the book "Majma' al-Amthal".
Results: The study compiled and linked food terms through their semantic components, summarizing them in tables. It found that terms like 'Ṭa‘ama' (to taste) and 'Dhāqa' (to try or taste) are used for both eating and drinking, while others are specific to eating. It also covers terms describing eating methods, food preparation techniques like 'cook', 'fry', and 'grill', and expressions for hunger and fullness. The research shows that different food names reflect the eater's circumstances and are associated with various social occasions or times.
Conclusions: The research shows that the diversity of expressions to convey a single meaning is laden with significant differences, rather than indicating mere synonymy. Some food terms have undergone semantic evolution, while others have been used metaphorically, contributing to the richness and expansion of the conversational lexicon of food in the book "Majma' al-Amthal." This has provided a rich resource for language dictionaries, which have drawn from it various linguistic meanings evidenced in proverbs.
