Abstract

Objective: This study explores the rhetorical concept of explication, both linguistically and technically. It discusses its development, types, components, features, synonyms, and psychological implications, with a focus on Arabic poetry as a field of application. The study also examines the traces of explication in poetic texts, highlighting its role in enhancing poetic expression and textual cohesiveness.

Methods: The study adopted the descriptive historical approach, as it is the most appropriate method for the field of rhetorical and critical terminology studies, capable of uncovering their development over time.

Results: The study found that interpretations of explication vary among language experts, critics, and rhetoricians. While definitions are generally similar, technical definitions relate closely to the concept. Explication was linked to textual cohesiveness in Arabic rhetoric and plays a key role in persuasion by moving beyond mere information to influence. Its aesthetic and psychological value lies in clarifying the unknown, enhancing the recipient’s understanding.

Conclusions: The study concludes that explication and interpretation are distinct concepts, as evidenced by the significant attention rhetoricians have given to the art of explication and their methods of making it prominent. Explication can be seen as an artistic and aesthetic parameter that aligns with the poet's intended meanings. Additionally, explication operates on a dependency relationship between common and private meanings, as well as between reduction and elaboration, depending on accuracy and alignment.
