Objectives: The study aimed to clarify the functional roles of the vocative sentence, focusing on the vocative particle and noun. It explored the roles played by the vocative particle, whether stated or omitted, and the functions of the vocative noun as a name, adjective, or title. It also examined when the repetition of the vocative sentence is appropriate in the Qur'an and how it conveys emotions.
Methods: The study is based on three main components: examination, classification, and analysis. By examining vocative sentences in the Quran, selecting relevant examples, and scrutinizing the roles of the vocative particle and the addressee, the research uncovers subtleties in their functional interactions. A specialized categorization system divides the noun in vocative cases into name, attribute, title, or nickname categories, tailored to the study's aims.
Results: The vocative particle "Ya" functions to elevate or lower the addressee’s status, highlight the majesty of the revelation, and alert the listener. The vocative noun, when used as a name, serves to belittle or expose, while as an adjective, it conveys honor, affection, and praise. As a title, it serves to magnify, recall origins, and remind of merit. Repetition of vocative sentences is effective in contexts like supplication and argumentation and can express emotions.
Conclusions: The study concludes by suggesting further research on vocative verses in the Quran and the prevalence of vocative sentences in poetic texts.
