The role of social media in religious values (Facebook as a model) “A case study on SIMAD University students in Somalia”

Abstract

Objectives: This research aimed to identify the effects of social media on religious values especially Facebook) at SIMAD University’s Students in Somalia.

Methods: This research is qualitative research, it conducts primary data using a questionnaire as a method of collection, the target population of this study based on SIMAD University students, with a sample size of 350 respondents.

Results: The use of social media, especially Facebook, for the purpose of entertainment, and communication with the opposite sex was strong, followed by reading and commenting on Posts, and the least purpose of using Facebook was to follow news and events. As for the effect of the use of Facebook on religious values, it was represented in the users’ preoccupation from performing ritual acts such as prayer on time, and it also affected the consciences of users, which reduced their feeling of embarrassment about the contents posted on Facebook that contradict their religion. Likewise, Facebook’s use of religious values has positive effects represented in identifying role models (Muslim scholars) on Facebook.

Conclusions: In light of the results of the study, it is important for educational institutions and parents to play a prominent role in rationalizing the use of social media, to benefit from their positives and avoid their negatives. Conducting a study on the effect of Facebook on students ’academic Performances in universities, strengthening the digital presence for Muslim Scholars in social media, especially on Facebook, to contact, guide and educate young people.
