Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to identify the habits and patterns of the Jordanian audience’s viewing of historical drama on Jordanian television channels, and its role in shaping the cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects of the audience.

Methodology: The study used a descriptive approach to the phenomenon and adopted a questionnaire to investigate the public's opinions. The sample consisted of 250 individuals distributed across the governorates of Amman, Irbid, and Karak.

Results: The results concluded that the role of historical drama shown by Jordanian television channels was characterized by negativity in shaping the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of viewers. Some scenes of that drama encouraged instances of violence and promoted social relations different from the prevailing ones in reality, affecting some community customs and traditions. The results also highlighted the problem of the content presented by social historical drama series, and their lack of focus on providing viewers with new knowledge consistent with the communicative function of television in presenting historical drama. Some contents of historical drama series sometimes affect the values of Jordanian society and are not compatible with its customs and traditions.

Conclusion: It is crucial for Jordanian television channels to select historical drama content that has a positive cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impact. There is a need to encourage social historical drama that deals with societal and individual conditions in a manner consistent with customs and traditions.
