Objectives: The study aimed to identify the potential benefits and drawbacks of using ChatGPT in higher education, as well as to determine the measures that higher education institutions should take to ensure its effective integration into education.
Methods: The study employed a systematic review method of studies published during the first year of ChatGPT's release (from January 2023 to December 2023). The Scopus database was selected, and the PRISMA extension was followed to identify suitable studies, resulting in the selection of 26 studies for inclusion in the current systematic review.
Results: The study results indicated a range of benefits of using ChatGPT in higher education, including: supporting self-directed learning, facilitating personalized learning, improving writing skills, providing advice and guidance, supporting distance learning, enhancing student performance and productivity, alleviating the burden on faculty members, and supporting scientific research. The results also revealed a range of drawbacks, such as: threatening academic integrity, excessive reliance on technology, privacy and security threats, generating misinformation, and bias. The results highlighted a set of measures to ensure its effective use in higher education institutions, such as ensuring equity in usage, providing training on usage, developing assessment methods, enhancing skills, and ensuring privacy and security.
Conclusion: The study recommends a set of measures and frameworks that aim to harness the benefits of this tool and avoid its negative effects, as well as develop programs and plans to implement measures related to integrating ChatGPT into higher education.
