Objectives: The study aimed to determine the degree of awareness among Jordanian university students regarding the role of generative AI-based chatbot applications in higher education from their perspective.
Methods: A descriptive analytical method was used to collect data via a questionnaire consisting of 68 items distributed across three domains: the use of generative AI-based chatbots in higher education, the disadvantages of these chatbots, and their benefits in higher education. The study sample comprised 456 students from Jordanian universities during the academic year 2023-2024.
Results: The results showed that the degree of awareness among Jordanian university students regarding the role of generative AI-based chatbot applications in higher education was high. Additionally, no statistically significant differences were found (α = 0.05) in the responses of the study sample regarding the role of these chatbots based on gender and cumulative GPA. However, statistically significant differences were found related to academic level, with postgraduate students showing higher awareness than undergraduate students. Further significant differences were found based on college type: medical colleges showed higher awareness than scientific colleges, and scientific and medical colleges showed higher awareness than humanities colleges.
Conclusion: The study recommended a set of procedures and frameworks to enable students to benefit from these applications while minimizing their negative impacts on higher education.
