Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to clarify the features of the pragmatics approaches that appeared among the exegesis books in directing the significance of the address forms used by humans to humans in the Holy Quran.

Methods: In this study, a sampling of exegesis books spanning a variety of eras and approaches was analyzed using the analytical descriptive approach; in light of pragmatic approaches, particularly the theory of politeness, interpreters' opinions are interpreted in their interpretation of interlocutors' choice of one form over another. The chosen testimonies resulted from the researcher's extrapolation of Quranic passages featuring human-to-human discourse. This selection focused exclusively on instances employing a distinctive deliberative form of address.

Results: The research concluded that, that in most cases the exegesis books refer to the fact that one of the interlocutors has departed from the traditional address formula in favor of a non-traditional address formula, morever, the interpreters' views had been diverse in directing them on the reasons and objectives of the reversal. The researcher pinpointed Quranic verses featuring human-to-human addresses, specifically focusing on unconventional forms of address selected for deliberative purposes.

Conclusions: Some interpreters provided explanatory visions without implying a functional aspect of this reversal in their views to explain the reason for this reversal; others provided functional explanations. Nevertheless, some were more pragmatic adhered to modern pragmatic approaches and saw the use of one address form instead of another as a “pragmatic” choice by the interlocutors to influence the outcome of the conversation.
