Social Anxiety and Its Relationship with Fear of Positive Evaluation and Fear of Negative Evaluation among University Students

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to reveal the level of social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation, and to find out whether there are differences in the levels of these variables due to gender. It also aimed to reveal the relationship between social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation.

Method: The social anxiety scale, fear of positive evaluation scale and fear of negative evaluation scale were used to achieve the objectives study. The study sample consisted (699) students at the Hashemite University.

Results: The results showed a moderate level of social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation. The results also showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the level of social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation due to gender. While the results showed that there were a positive and statistically significant relationship between social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation.

Conclusions: The study recommends directing parents and teachers to use appropriate educational methods in raising children. The negative experiences and attitudes that an individual experience within his/her family or at his/her university may have a significant impact on the emergence of social anxiety disorder.
